Alone in the Dark (2008) (Xbox 360)

(untitled review)

After hearing all the abuse thrown at AITD i decided to give it a try after seeing a demo on XBL. I was prepared to name it one of the worst games ever but hear me out.

Sure the camera can be a pain but the demo is actually quite good in giving you a taste of the game and i actually wanted to play more. The fancy physics and real world system that Atari bragged about works! Plus its really fun to smack people with random objects like lamps and also create your own in game object like molotovs.

Sure this is based on the demo and the game may be worse but its far from an atrocity if you just give it a go. The damage detail on the guy's clothes also add a nice little touch.

The lighting efects are some of the best I've seen and the fire effects (play a big part) but they do look as amazing as they do in trailers.

It's another game where you aren't an invincible nano suite wearing tank so thats another point even though the main character is a bit generic along with the story but it holds up. It's trying to mimick TV shows and movies so plenty of cheese inbound. The fact that you are just an everyman seems to annoy people. It's like Gordon Freeman is the only respectable one around.

I didnt get much taste for the story in a short time but all i could get was that some people aere trying to summon deamons and you play some part in that somehow but you are also going to be the one to stop them. Hard to tell as you are suffering memory loss so you are about as clued up as the character.

I don't know what made people hate the game so much. It suffers from Kane and Lynch, Assassin's Creed syndrome. It wasnt the game all the rabid eccentrics wanted so people shunned it. People with a liking for games at all should at least give the demo a shot, it is free after all and I actually felt mildly impressed afterwards.

  • Battlefield is a name that's pretty familiar to most, if not all PC gamers. The consoles got two Modern Combat titles, which were slated by most people for some reason even though I thought it was great. Then there was Bad Company, and no-one was really sure what was going on. It had a real SP mode, some MP games even though the classic conquest game-type was to be added via DLC. Needless to...

  • Resident Evil is one of the most historic Survival Horror franchises. It managed to provide tense gameplay and have a very deep story at the same time. Over the years we have seen titles on many consoles, have a brief online following (Outbreak), and G Con spinoff (Dead Aim) and some FPS remakes (Survivor). RE4 was a major...

  • What made me excited for this game is that it was made by the people who were involved with the Riddick game on Xbox and that was pure awesomeness and The Darkness is just as good. You play as a 21 year old hitman for the mafia. Problem is that your uncle thinks you are getting to far ahead and decides to have you killed. You don't like that. So you murder your way through cops, gangsters,...

  • So when the first trailer for this game was released everyone was all “whhooaahh!!!” Then a demo came out and people were still excited. Then the game came out. While it was fresh and exciting it also has its shortcomings. The new running mechanic was really fun outside until you found out that you were going the wrong way and that combo of awesome moves was wasted. Then it went inside and...

  • Fallout3 is pretty much Bethesda trying to make some cash for the run up to TES5 or the teased TESMMO. Let me explain. Every time I turn on this game I get reminded about how much better and prettier Oblivion is. The graphics were amazing, the world was immersive and everything was...better. I know it’s bad to compare the two but they are just both so alike. Same controls, same set up, same...
